Remont stood on the wet sidewalk, across the street from the opulent apartment in this most prestigious of neighborhoods in London.

Truth be told, he had grown tired of the city not long after arriving. English society had always set his teeth on edge. It seemed everyone was trying to outshine the other. Now he could scarcely wait until they left for Scotland.

Knowing Darius as he did, his friend would want to leave the city the moment he heard the news about Gabrielle’s uncle, and he could not blame him. Gabrielle’s life depended on it.

After leaving the soirée, Remont had returned to the townhouse to tell Darius what he had found out about Gabrielle’s uncle.

However, Darius had been in his chamber, and Remont had no desire to disturb him. After all, he had only just been reunited with his wife after a five-hundred-year separation. Lord knows they could use the time to get reacquainted. And why ruin the night for all of them?

Remont could not be happier for his dear friend. Darius deserved all the happiness in the world. To watch him go through Rose’s death had been horrific. Everyone deserved to have a soul mate, he convinced himself, even though he knew that he would never know the kind of love Darius and Rose had shared, and were going to share again.

Not as long as he continued to love Demetri.

Case in point, he stood outside Lord Whitcomb’s mistress’s humble dwelling waiting for his lover to surface. How tempted Remont had been to send a courier around to Whitcomb’s estate across town, where no doubt the old aristocrat snoozed beside his wife of nearly forty years, to tell him his little lover was busy entertaining someone else tonight.

But of course Remont had not for fear something would happen to Demetri.

Wouldn’t Whitcomb be shocked to know his much younger lover entertained a vampire in the expensive apartment he had purchased just a few months ago. Indeed, she had kicked and screamed like a child to get said apartment. Remont had read her thoughts enough to know she feared being discovered by her lover, but she did not want to let Demetri slide through her fingers either.

Remont had little doubt it had been Demetri himself who convinced the little vixen that fucking anywhere but her apartment was a bad idea. Demetri thrived on danger.

Sadly, even now, as his lover had sex with another, Remont’s blood still simmered in his veins, remembering last night when they had made love so passionately. Remont had had more than his share of lovers in his time, and Demetri put them all to shame. The man had been born with an abundant skill for lovemaking.

But sadly, those skills did not cross over and translate into a highly emotional connection.

Out of nowhere a couple rounded the corner, surprising him. Remont had been too lost in thought, and now as they approached, he removed the flask from his jacket, opened it, and took a long drink of brandy.

They were perhaps a decade older than himself.
